MV ‘My Girl’

Portland Harbour

25/09/24

On Saturday 21st September representatives from RHQ RAA, Dorchester and Poole Branch Members were invited to join family and friends to commemorate the vessel’s skipper Jeff Waters and present ‘My Girl’ with a new pennant.

In 1939 as war loomed over Britain the Government were seeking boats to carry ammunition to the Breakwater Forts guarding His Majesty’s Naval Base at Portland. This resulted in pleasure boat MV ‘My Girl’ requisitioned for war service.

With Ron Hill as her Skipper, and his brother Bert as the crew member, ‘My Girl’ was in service throughout the war, often sailing under aerial bombardment, in all weathers. She carried soldiers, stores, medical staff, ammunition and much eagerly awaited mail from family and sweethearts.

After the war, ‘My Girl’ reverted to her role as a pleasure boat and still continues to carry passengers and holiday makers between the harbours of Weymouth and Portland .

Thank you to Jeff’s family and the Crew of Coastline Cruises, Weymouth for inviting us to this special day and a lovely trip around the harbour.

‘My Girl’ now proudly carries her RA pennant, carrying her official title: MV My Girl, to mark her war service to the Royal Artillery.
